Literacy

Literacy is at the core of learning at Sentinel Kabitaka. We believe that without a high level of understanding, fluent reading or writing, children are effectively at a disadvantage, in their later studies, no-matter what the subject. Our pupils undergo an intensive program of phonics, in the early years, followed by learning to fully comprehend texts and understand the meaning of what they are reading. Reading for information or pleasure are both covered. Being able to write for differing purposes in good prose is also essential, along with the ability listen to others and speak their own thoughts clearly. Both are an integral part of the literacy taught in the primary at Sentinel Kabitaka.

Mathematics

The mathematics taught is based on the UK National Curriculum and consists of areas of ‘Shape, Space and Measure’, ‘Number and Calculation’, ‘Data interpretation’ and ‘Mental Arithmetic’. We take a problem-solving approach to learning maths, engaging students in the topics through asking questions that make them think, and activities that encourage them to explore and practise.

Science

Science within the primary is taught in topics, from Reception to Year 5, covering all the basic scientific areas. We emphasise the practical aspects, reinforcing scientific ideas with hands-on experience as much as is practicable. Additional emphasis is placed on the scientific method, fair testing and critical thinking.

International Primary Curriculum (IPC)

The International Primary Curriculum is a topic based scheme, which we use to deliver the history, geography and humanities content of our curriculum. Through engaging topics each term the pupils learn more about the world around them and their place within it. The emphasis is on research and collaborative learning, which not only covers the specific topic being studied but cuts across curriculum lines to include all the other areas of study. Pupils are encouraged to think critically, discuss and form opinions as well as learn about different aspects of the world today and in the past.
